Nfld Travel Day 10; 26 Sept 16

The  Ziglos are flying home to Regina  today so their 10 day holiday in Nfld comes to a close.
We had an excellent breakfast provided by Keith and Marilyn and then said farewell to Lynda and Vince.


The Ziglo's had some time to kill before their flight so they wanted to see the town/area of Dildo. ( Hey , you can make this stuff up....  I know you are going to Goggle it ) .It is unincorporated so it is not a town but a place. In short , the name is attested to  have  been around since 1711, however, it is also known that Captain  cook and his assistant , Michael Lane where not above naming areas with names that might offend over-sensitive folks.  The Ziglo's are one up on us as we did not go to Dildo.




We are staying with K and M for another night so they drove around the area to show us more of the Nfld history. If you are a visitor to Nfld , everything is "Scenery" because it is so much different than anywhere we have lived or traveled. Our first stop was the town of Bristol's Hope where one of the Transatlantic Telegraph cable entered Nfld in 1856. Several cables were laid from Britain to Canada in that era, some successful other not so but I guess it was a trail error venture in those days. A Museum has been set up in the old Bristol's Hope , Court House to depict the arrival of the Transatlantic Cable and the history of the area. For such a small town this was a great Museum.


We then traveled along the Arm of Conception Bay looking at the scenery and landscape features. Near Carbanear  there is a ship that got swamped in the early 1900's and has been stuck in the mud every since. A side story is the Dan Cleary, who played for the Detroit Red Wings played his Minor Hockey in this area.   During their run for the Stanley Cup , the town hung a banner along the entire side of the ship cheering for their Home Town hero.


This area has some great hiking trails along the coast but it was too rainy and windy for us to challenge the trails.  We did however is some different rock formations that the water had craved out of the shore line with years of beating from the waves.


Our drive for the day was coming to a close so the Keith thought we should stop for a Tea and Toutons. (Go ahead and hit the goggle button again). When we first heard about Toutons one Newfie   said  ( with tongue in cheek ) that is was failed bread doe and since they did not want to waste it, they pan fried it in butter.  It appears to be bread doe without yeast, pan fried  and then  drizzle it with molasses. It does resemble and English muffin so the English probably ran out of Jam so the use molasses. We liked it and would definitely order it again.


It was getting close to "Miller Time" so we returned to our "Free" B and B for supper and stories about travel. K and M are going to tour South Africa so we gave them our itinerary. We are flying back to Halifax tomorrow and the Thistles are taking us to Airport. Cheers
