After the Scotties finals on Sunday we get our life back until the Olympic start next week.
The weather is looking better this week and ranged from 10 C to 15 C which is not what we expected in sunny TX but it is better than rain.
Also our street had a block Pot Luck breakfast which was suppose to be a meet and greet so we could all get to meet the people we don't know. As I expected most people did not try to meet any of the new people like us, they just sit and talk to the people they have known for the past 20 years.
I first sat beside a couple from MB with a German name so I tried to start a conversation by asking where they were from. After a short conversation on their home town, a friend of theirs came along and they dropped me like a had 2 heads. Then I turned and introduced myself to 2 ladies and ask where they were from. One lady said Iowa so I tried to continue the conversation by asking the name of the town since I was familiar with Iowa. She mentioned the town and turned away. I thought, for Christ sake is nobody going to ask me where I'm from, so I took a seat beside Carroll and had a great breakfast. However, they can stick the next Block party up their ass. Most of the people on our street are Canadians.
As I've said many times, Seniors are just old kids. In the military, if we see a new person in the Mess we introduce our self and buy them a beer; we don't ignore them.
Carroll's has a continuous pain in her back and knees so we decided to go to a Chiropractor that she went to about 8 years ago when we were here. The first appointment was a consultation and then several x-rays and finally a Scan along her vertebrates. The next appointment will be a treatment plan to hopefully stop the pain.
On Saturday we went to South Padre Island to watch a Kite show. I know a Kite show sound boring but once you see what these men and women can do with a kite it is fantastic. One display had 12 players standing shoulder to shoulder doing synchronize kite flying. They can even land the kites in synchronized fashion and get they up again in the same fashion. It was well worth the price of admission which was free. There were several thousand fans along the beach watching the display. However, after 2 1/2 hours , boredom kicked in and we called it a day. Weather Report.

We along with 1/2 a dozen other folks go to the Hot Tub around 8:30 each evening, assuming nothing more important interrupts our routine. However, the weather has not cooperated this week so we did not get to go at all.
I keep a record of the temp each morning at 7 AM and the temp ranged from a low on Wed of 1 C to a high of 13 C on Saturday. Granted the temp did range a bit higher whenever the sun showed it smiling face. Also Carroll's Aguacise class is a No GO unless the temp is above 15 C.
Our Landlord has ShawDirect satellite but it comes from Wpg which mean some programs are from Eastern Canada and the US which means we don't get the Western stations that we normally watch. It also means I did not get to see the Oilers lose most games. Since we suspected this problem, we brought an extra LNB and two of our receivers with us and I installed them this week. We also brought an extra TV so I had to run in an extra line.
We need His and Her TV's to servive as Carroll does like too much Sports and Business and I do not need any HGTV and Food network. Problem solved.
Beside watching the Curling this week we took in a movie called the " The Post " with our friends from Brandon. We try to take in a movie in the late afternoon and then go for supper.
Another large , upscale RV and Golf Resort, close by has recently build a large convention center complete with a restaurant and bar. Every Friday night they serve a Fish Fry and since we have friends at that park we got them to save us a table and we along with our Brandon friend had a great meal and spent time with our friends there.
In closing, we are hoping for the Texas sunshine that we hoped to see, will arrive next week. cheers

Tom flies to Calgary

Yes, I did really fly back to Calgary but not because I missed the -33 C weather but because of my health Insurance. I spent the 9 th to the 11 th in Okotoks /Calgary and this convince me that spending a winter in Canada is not my cup of tea.
In Oct my doctor took a look at my annual medical results and determined that I "might " have a slight blockage in one of my arteries. However, it was determined that I did not need any medication nor was there any reason to check it out any further. However, this was enough for my Travel Insurance company to refuse my request for Insurance so I only have 40 days Insurance and I have to return home twice during our stay in TX. Hopefully I can have this rectified for next year.
Other News: The price of Gas has jumped from 2.05 to 2.29 so that gives us another topic to complain about. I went to HEB ( this is the TX competition to Wal-Mart ) to to fill up with fuel and I paid cash with 40.00 ( pay before you pump ). Since my car only took 38.00 I went to the Island wicket to get my 2.00 back. At exactly that instant that the clerk went to return my 2.00 the computer crashed. The clerk could not restart ( reboot ) the computer so she called for help but the assistance could not do much better so after waiting outside in the rotten weather for 20 minutes, while they played with the computer, I gave up and let them keep my 2 bucks.
My flight from Calgary to Weslaco ( actually it is McAllen ) included a flight change with a 2 hour wait in Houston. Houston has 5 Terminals and I landed on schedule at Terminal C but my connection was at Terminal A. So I march over to Terminal C and after waiting for 2 hours we were advised that our incoming flight was diverted ( no reason ) and that it would be late. As a result we lost our gate and were told to go to Terminal C which caused another 2 hour delay with a launch time of 4:05. During our wait at Terminal C , Houston got hit by a terrible rain/wind storm which lasted about 1/2 an hour which further delays for incoming and outbound flights. Then about 20 minutes later Houston got a hail storm for 20 minutes or so which further delayed the flights.
As a result we got another 2 hour delay and had to change to Terminal E. Changing terminal doesn't sound like a problem but in Houston you have to walk quite a distance and then grab a Monorail. As it turns out the monorail and my gates where also at the opposite end of the Terminal. We finally got airborne shortly after 6 PM. Since I was up at 3: 30 AM to catch my 7 AM flight out of Calgary I was getting very tired and weary.
Carroll was suppose to pick me up in McAllen but do the flight delays and the fact that we had to ticket to a Brooks and Dunn concert ( The Legends ) she went to the concert not knowing when I would be arriving. I arrived around 8PM so I had to take a 52.00 taxi ride home. Cheers

The Park was fairly quiet during the Fall and up to the end of Dec but this week there was a flurry of activity as the majority of the residence started to roll in.
However, the main subject or should I say the "Winning " is all about the rotten weather. This week was a mixture with mostly rain, or actually a continuous misty rain coupled with some Sunshine. Wed started a 2 C but reached 11 C with Sun. The rest of the week was a yoyo but there was some warm temperatures with some cloudy days.... so the beat goes on. suffice to say the swimming pool and the hot tub are not crowded.
Now a story about money.
Our friends from Med Hat have a bank account here in TX and every year they bring a Bank Draft from their TD USD bank account and deposit it in their bank account here in TX and to coin a phase " Bob's your Uncle". Not so easy this year.
However, since the Bank draft was for $5,000.00 their Bank in TX requires that the draft have two authorized signatures from the TD bank and it was not so they could not deposit it.
Known amount of " ass kissing " could get it deposited.
The only solution was to sent the Bank draft back to their TD bank in Med Hat; have the check endorsed by another person of authority and sent it back to TX.
The TD bank should have known that it required two signatures so they covered the cost of the couriers, but what a "schmozzle "
I guess what I don't understand is, why anyone would carry a bank draft when you bank will transfer the money to your account in TX. Cheers

30 and 31 Dec 17
The Winter Texans are arriving in droves. Our Park has about 1,000 residence ( 500 park units ) and before Christmas there was less than 200 residence. By New years eve about half of the missing had arrived and the park becomes a beehive of activity.
Many of the residence have planted native plants like cactus and
alovera plants. During the summer and fall these plants have gone wild so they have to be pruned back so all there residences where cutting or hacking these plant back. Our neighbors about 10 very beautiful plants that had grown to 8 feet and when they finished hacking they had 21 bags of plant refuse.
The on site maintenance workers are working overtime to pick up all the waste products.
Saturday was a Hockey Day with the World Juniors in full swing and then there was 10 NHL games so nothing else was on the menu today. I won't call it a wasted day but with the cold, rainy, windy weather, doesn't provide much initiative to do much else but to watch TV and to read a book.

Well it is the end of another year and our plans for New Years Eve is to do nothing exciting except to wait for the ball to drop in New York. If you are not at a party how else do you bring in the New Year.
On Sunday morning we had the per verbally breakfast with friends. However, 2 new couples from MB joined us so we now have 4 more friends to add to our list. Nobody had ever been to this particular restaurant before so we thought it might be an experience. But as we entered the place there were 2 tables of 12 Winter Texans eating breakfast so we knew it was cheap and it must be good. 4.49 for a full breakfast.
Other than watching hockey we watch the New years Eve parties on TV until it was 12 o,clock in Winnipeg ( we are on the same time ) and that was the end of 2017.
Note: From now on I will do a weekly blog summary and hopefully I will do it on Sundays. Since the weather has changed for the better the continuous " Wining" will stop and besides we are running out of cheese that goes with the wine. Cheers

Sunny Texas My A??

Of course it is still raining, windy and cold because the temp is 8 C to 10 C. The weather report say it will likely get colder as we head for the New Year.
The only good thing is that we have the World Junior Hockey to help pass the time. I am on my second book so you know how bored I am.

Our friends from Med Hat hope to leave home on the 31 Dec if they can get thru Montana and Wyoming as the weather report is not good. Anyway we volunteered to open their winter home that is next to us; basically by turning on the power and checking that all the Electrical systems was working as they have not been here for 2 years. We turned on the fridge and removed insulated panels from the windows. Because of the high temp ( 100 F or more) in the summer the windows must be block with insulated and reflective panels.
Once our friends call to say they have left home we will turn on their gas and light the furnace so the house warm and not feel damp on their arrival.
It is kind of funny to see all the flowers covered with sheets. Cheers.

Boxing day

As if I needed to date this Blog, however I need the date line so I can refer to this blog should I need it a year from now. This blog files everything by date.
AS an example ,we had friends over for a beer/wine on Sunday and we where debating when and where we had first meet. We guessed 10 years ago in Ville Corona, MX . They guessed 6 years ago at the same place. I checked on my blog and it was March 2010. "Argument Solved ".
We visited with our friend Terry to see what she did on Christmas Day since she is at another park. They had their dinner at 1 PM so their party was over by 3 PM.
Then we parked our bodies in front of the TV to watch the World Junior Hockey games until we tired of hockey. At our scheduled time of 8:30 we went to the Hot Tub even thought the temp was around 10 C. We expected to be the only ones there but a couple from Brooks with their 2 kids showed up as they were visiting their parents whom have a winter home here. After soaking for an hour and swapping stories in the Hot Tub we called it a day.
We close out most evenings by watching the CBC news as our Landlords have Shaw Direct satellite which we appreciate. cheers
